Tragic death

The Berwick City Soccer Club has lost one of their key team members, with the sudden death of 20-year-old Jeremias ’Jem’ Sprague on Friday 15 December following a medical episode.

The captain of the 2023 Berwick City Reserves had been involved with a number of clubs across the South East, including Langwarrin Soccer Club and the Berwick Churches Soccer Club. Club president Tim Hobson said the loss of Jem would leave a significant absence at the club.

“It’s a big loss for our community,” he said. “Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his team mates.”

Club president Tim Hobson said Jem had also been involved at coaching some of the younger teams.

“He was very kind with his time,” he said. “He had just as much time for the kids.”

Mr Hobson said the loss of Jem would leave a significant absence at the club.

“It’s a big loss for our community,” he said. “It’s a big hit for everyone. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his team mates.”

The Berwick City club took to social media to honour Jem.

“Jem was not just a skilled player on the field but also a cherished teammate and friend to many,” the club said.

“As we come to terms with this profound loss, let us remember the joy and camaraderie that Jem brought into our lives.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Berwick Churches Soccer Club also took to social media to share their condolences. “We join with Jem’s family in grief and shock at his sudden passing and offer our sincere condolences to all who knew, loved and played with Jem,” the club said.

“We sit, holding the tension of utter sadness that Jem is no longer here but that he is joined with Christ for eternity.

“We invite everyone in the BCSC family to include the Sprague family in your prayers, and to throw on your favourite soccer jersey in memory of Jem.”

A GoFundMe campaign to support Jem’s family has already raised more than $9300 at the time of publication towards its $10,000 goal, after the campaign was launched two days ago.

Organiser Glenys Downs said any financial support the community could provide would allow Jem’s family to focus on the healing process.

“There are no words that can take away the enormity of their grief,” she said.

“In times like these, it will be the support of their family and friends that may help with the burden of expenses and enable them to have the time and space to mourn this tragic loss.

“As we join hands in solidarity through this difficult time, I extend a plea if people can offer some sort of financial assistance.”

The Sprague family will be hosting a Celebration of Life service on Friday 22 December from 2pm at Berwick Church of Christ.
